“A liberal and civilian constitution lies ahead of us with the opportunity to construct our democracy from the bottom up”

Speaking at the Council of State’s 158th Foundation Anniversary Ceremony, President Erdoğan said: “A new, inclusive, liberal and civilian constitution lies ahead of us with the opportunity to construct our democracy from the bottom up. We must ensure that the constitution is no longer a framework determined and imposed upon the society by coup plotters or elites, transforming it into a text which the society itself determines and declares to the state.”

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan delivered a speech at the Council of State’s 158th Foundation Anniversary Ceremony in Ankara.

Stating that despite the four constitutions drafted since the Ottoman Constitution of 1876, the Turkish nation’s yearning for an appropriate constitution has yet to be fully satisfied, President Erdoğan said: “The fact that our last two constitutions, except the founding ones, were the products of coup plotters’ unlawful interventions plays a major role in this situation. It is a moral obligation for the Turkish politics to fix this disgrace on democracy.”

Stressing that a liberal and civilian constitution lies ahead of Türkiye with the opportunity to construct the Turkish democracy from the bottom up, President Erdoğan went on to say: “We must ensure that the constitution is no longer a framework determined and imposed upon the society by coup plotters or elites, transforming it into a text which the society itself determines and declares to the state. Through such a constitution, I believe, it would be possible for us to adopt a superior legal logic that would safeguard the law, democracy, the state, and the nation all at once.  We will continue to put this issue above all political considerations, keeping it in our minds and high on our reform agenda.”
